The Story of.....The Journey Ahead

Ah finally, the dreaded day has arrived bringing along with it a flood of results and rush of gratification. You've done it! You're finally out of school and out into the world, now no one can stop you, the whole world's your oyster, you are an adult......except now the question arises...What next?

Here's a few questions to ask yourselves during the long sabbatical where you're basically floating between the worlds of school and college and have no clue what lies ahead.

1) How were your results according to you?

The first few days after you get your results will be filled with relatives, friends and random acquaintances crawling out of the woodwork, asking you how you did. Now if you did great, then great! You will be showered with gifts and congratulations, not to mention the perks of the envious glances of your younger cousins who will now be constantly told to follow your example. But if you didnt do great either by your own standard or by the arbitrary standards set by your school and family then it is time to deal with the emotional impact of it all. Take a few weeks to rejuvenate yourself and remind yourself that it is not the end of the world, many more opportunities lay ahead. Also confide in friends, who have gone through a similar experience to find out how their lives turned out. Ten out of ten times, they'll tell you that their board results made no difference to their success in life.

2) What's the plan for college?

College is an important stepping stone to your future so chances are, you've already picked the place you want to go. Keep factors like your results, the readiness to deal with living away from home, you adaptability and future plans in mind while picking out a college. If you didn't get into the college you planned for due to factors beyond your control, do not fret, there's always the option of grad school!

3) How to make some me-time?

This is basically the most freeing time of our lives so most of us spend time sleeping, hibernating, wiping the traumatic memories of high school and exams and studying, clean from our minds. Ask yourself if that is the most productive thing you can do. I know I act all high and mighty as though I spent my summer doing volunteer work at a soup kitchen or mountain climbing, but literally all I did was watch romantic comedies, travel and take selfies. And that's fine! If that's what you want to do. But making a bucket list and trying to cross off things from it is a fun and useful to make use of the time on your hands.

4) How do I adult?

Okay I cannot stress this enough, only go and stay away from home IF YOU'RE READY. Because if not, you'll end up a hot mess with unwashed laundry, cans of expired food and a hopeless attitude. Spend time learning basic life skills from cooking to driving to studying without being told. But here's the secret. NOBODY knows how to adult, we're all just faking it.

At the end of it all, the results time and the subsequent free time that ensues, is a whirlwind of emotions. Happy to be free of it all, uncertain of the journey ahead. Just remember this is one chapter of your life, be glad it's over no matter what the outcome. Exciting times lie ahead: first college experience, first job, falling in love, starting a family or not, the choices are endless!  In school, you are spoonfed from a pre set menu, here out in the real world, it's all a la carte! Bon Appetit and Good Luck! :D
